The word “entertainment” has come to be strongly associated with amusement. This may be because entertainment has traditionally been used to create a sense of light-heartedness or playfulness in the context of a banquet, celebration, religious festival, or satire, for example. However, entertainment can also have a more serious purpose.
According to Oliver and Barstsch (2010), entertainment can be defined as an activity that is understood objectively, encompasses communication between text and audience from an external stimulus, offers pleasure, requires an audience, and occurs in a passive form. These elements show that entertainment has the potential to evolve and take on many different forms.
